A petitioner urged one of the disqualification cases filed against presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to expedite the decision on the pending motion for reconsideration just 49 days before the May 9 elections.
In a letter submitted to the Comelec signed by Akbayan Party-list nominees Percival Cendaña and Raymond John Naguit, the group said the poll body should only issue its ruling because it is not just about a candidate because it also depends on it. the outcome of the election and will determine the future of our country.
He said such an issue must be resolved because it could rob many Filipinos of the ability to choose from genuine and qualified candidates.
The petitioners believe that there is no reason to delay the ruling because the seven-man panel en banc of the Comelec is complete.
The group reiterated its stance that Marcos was convicted of tax evasion while serving as Governor of Ilocos. He said the punishment for his crime clearly proves that he should be disqualified from holding a government position.
According to the group, it is the responsibility of the Comelec to ensure that only qualified candidates are allowed to run for the highest position in the country.
The First Division of the Comelec had earlier rejected Akbayan’s petition for the disqualification case against Marcos for lack of merit.
